GMO: Demand Your Right to Know!
“We believe consumers have a right to know what they are eating and we will fight to give consumers the right to choose whether or not to buy genetically engineered foods.” — Jean Halloran, Director of Food Policy Initiatives at Consumers Union
Demand your right to know!
If ever there was a time to stand up for your right to know what’s in your food, it’s now. State lawmakers and voters all across the country are considering bills and measure to label genetically engineered foods sold in the state. Click here to learn more about what is happening in your state.
Labeling gives your family more information about the foods you buy, with little impact on grocery costs. But Monsanto and the rest of the biotech industry doesn’t want you to know what’s in your food, and is pulling out the stops to kill it.
For more than two decades, Consumers Union has supported labeling genetically engineered food, so consumers can make informed choices for both health and the environment.
Why Label GE foods?
Genetically engineered food is fundamentally different from the kinds of foods humans have eaten since we came into existence on this planet. Through genetic engineering, bacteria and even human genes have been put in plants, and insect genes put in goats. While other countries require premarket safety testing, the US FDA does not. Many processed foods already contain genetically engineered corn and soy, and GE apples and salmon may soon be for sale. Labeling laws need to be passed before the market is flooded with GE foods.
Polls show Americans overwhelming support their right to know what is in their food.
Currently 64 countries label genetically engineered foods, also known as genetically modified organisms (GMOs), including Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom
Will labeling GMO food cause prices to go up?
In short, no. Despite what Monsanto and large corporations have said, there is no proof that giving customers more information will force prices to go up.
