Great news for pizza and pasta lovers: due to concerns about BPA in liners of food cans, Eden Foods will now use amber glass to package the company’s organic tomatoes and tomato sauces. BPA, commonly found in the lining of food cans, is a chemical that has been linked to developmental and reproductive problems.
Their recent action has put the harmful effects of BPA into focus. For years now, Eden Foods has been an industry leader in phasing out BPA from their food products. Eden states that it puts other types of food, such as beans, in cans that are free of BPA. Mike Potter Founder and President of Eden Foods said, about the removal of BPA from their bean cans almost 10 years ago, “It was the right thing to do. I didn’t want BPA in food I was serving to my kids, my grandkids or my customers.”
However the non-BPA can liner that Eden uses for beans is not suitable for tomatoes. Therefore, Eden Foods tomatoes will be packaged in BPA- free amber glass. Hopefully, this will push other companies to follow suit.
