20 miles down the road from me is one of the largest beef feed lots in this part of the country (NW)...1/2 a million head. They are ur typical feed lot. Cattle crowded into holding pens by the thousands. In the wet weather they stand up to their bellies in mud and feces. They are taken from the feed lot to the slaughterhouse this way and people wonder why they have ecoli. These cattle have no cover or are they provided with clean straw like the dairy cattle. This alone would cut down on the need for antibiotics...cleanliness to some degree would help. As long as the dollar is the focus then u can count on ur meat products from large producers to be treated....the govern't will NOT stop it. The cattle producers like this have to much money and this would cut into their profits or we would pay much more for the product.
The west has enough land yet to be able to raise our beef on grass and natural folage but with all the land developement and cut back in range availability this will soon pass too.
