We’re hearing from supporters of our “meat without drugs” campaign that they’re getting email responses from Trader Joe’s.
The company still won’t meet with us, so we’re glad to hear they at least care what consumers think. But we’ve taken a look at their email response, and Trader Joe’s just doesn’t get the point of this campaign.
VP Matt Sloan says they “do not presume to make choices” for their customers, and then their letter lists their current offerings of antibiotic-free meat products.
We’re glad Trader Joe’s offers their customers SOME meat raised without antibiotics. But that doesn’t get us where we need to go.
Until major food chains like Trader Joe’s stop buying from growers that overuse antibiotics, we won’t truly address our public health crisis. We need to END the overuse of antibiotics in meat production to help ensure they don’t lose their effectiveness for people.
Trader Joe’s already makes decisions based on public health and environmental concerns: they only sell sustainably-raised fish and cage-free eggs, and their Trader Joe’s brand products do not contain GMOs.
Trader Joe’s key competitor, Whole Foods, is already committed to only selling meat raised without antibiotics. It’s time for more grocery retailers to step up to the plate. Trader Joe’s is well-positioned to make this change, and become a big part of the solution in the public health battle to keep our antibiotics working.

I guess everyone should join me at Whole Foods. A much better establishment than Trader Joe’s.
Maybe it’s time to just give up the meat altogether!

RE Judy: We’ve not stepped into Whole Foods for at least a decade, after we saw how much they are misleading their customers. E.g., favoring “natural’ brands with GEs in them and marketing ‘local’ apples from S-America…. I’d much rather go to farmers markets and COOP stores to get the real thing; and for the meats (mainly for dogs and a little for my husband), we order humane certified organic meats online. Now, WF seems to have established, founded, and funded its own ‘humane’ certification program which seems pointless with its 5 steps where farmers can choose the degree to how humane they want to treat their animals. What a joke but money can buy a lot.
