The Meat Without Drugs team rocked the Rockies last week for the opening of three Trader Joe’s stores in Colorado on February 14th.
The company opened its first stores in the state – two in Denver and one in Boulder – and the team was overwhelmed by support for our campaign asking Trader Joe’s to stop selling meat raised on antibiotics. From the great media coverage to meeting local folks who care about this issue to delivering almost 3,000 petition signatures to Trader Joe’s new stores, Coloradans really helped send the message that they don’t want meat raised on drugs.
On Monday, a full page ad ran in local papers calling on the company to end its sale of antibiotic-raised meat. In our press release we called on Trader Joe’s to take action: “The antibiotics we depend on to treat infectious diseases are losing their power. We need to stop wasting these critical medications on healthy livestock. Trader Joe’s can take an important stand for public health by no longer selling meat from animals that have been routinely fed antibiotics.”
Our favorite campaign mascot, Joe the Pig, made a Rocky Mountain appearance, showing up in downtown Boulder to hand out tote bags and thanking businesses in Denver and Boulder that source no-antibiotics meat.
On Friday when the new Trader Joe’s stores opened, Coloradans turned out to help deliver signatures to store management including local resident Diane Birmingham, RN, who hosted a petition on Change.org calling on the company to stop selling meat raised on antibiotics. Over the weekend, the Boulder Daily Camera also ran a fantastic guest op-ed by Diane.
“As long as grocery stores continue to sell meat from animals that are routinely fed antibiotics, they will be contributing to the declining effectiveness of these medications. We need grocery stores like Trader Joe’s to put public health first by only selling meat from suppliers who ensure the responsible use of antibiotics,” she says.
The week was rounded out with exciting news when Chick-fil-A announced that the company will be transitioning to all no-antibiotics chicken for their restaurant within five years. The marketplace is moving! Will Trader Joe’s be next??
